iA Writer 7

Jan 12, 2024 | Productivity

Popular writing assistant iA Writer has introduced a new feature that clearly differentiates between text written by a human and text generated by AI systems like ChatGPT.

AI-generated text is grayed out, while text written by the user is black (or white for people writing in dark mode). This allows users to see what parts are their original work vs. what AI contributed.

The goal is to use AI as a “dialogue partner” to spark ideas and improve writing, not as a “ghostwriter” that takes over the writing process.

Users have to mark AI-generated text as such manually, by first setting up the writer’s authorship. The app doesn’t automatically detect or watermark AI text, and will even ignore HTML tags added to the text, leaving them gray.

This feature ostensibly encourages the “ethical use” of AI in writing by making it easy to give proper credit to AI contributions while still maintaining the user’s original voice and style.

Overall, iA Writer 7 aims to offer a nuanced approach to integrating AI that augments rather than replaces human creativity in writing. However, we believe most users will find the additional settings layer cumbersome enough not to bother with it.
